Angels Camp
California

For our May First Sunday Drive, we drove though some nearby foothills where parts of the 1958 classic The Big Country, was filmed. And along the way though the curves and rolling hills, we spotted an event thought to be long extinct from California - genuine cowboys.

There were about 20 together, pickups and horse trailers nearby, and they were all roping steers. Since it was in a small fenced enclsure we all wondered if it was a practice session? A Steer Roping School?

We then passed the historic Snow Ranch, where some of the above motion picture was filmed. Think of the scene where Gregory Peck meets the schoolmarm Jean Simmons at her old family ranch by a creek.

Lunch was further up the hill in a town made famous by a visiting Mark Twain. One day some bored miners decided to hold a frog race, and barring a few years year and there, it is still held every year.
